Invité  : Matthias SCHMUTH

Sujet :  Towards pathogenesis-based therapy for disorders of cornification

Biosketch :

Matthias Schmuth received his MD from the University of Vienna, completed his internship at the Benjamin Franklin Medical Center, Free University Berlin and continued training in dermatology and dermatopathology at the University of Innsbruck. He was research fellow and visiting professor at New York University and the University of California, San Francisco. Currently, Dr. Schmuth serves as professor and chair at the Medical University Innsbruck.

Dr. Schmuth's research interest has focused on the molecular biology of epidermal differentiation and genodermatoses. He is the recipient of the Erwin Schroedinger Fellowship of the Austrian Science Fund. His research team has extensively studied skin barrier function in disorders of cornification (e.g. ichthyosis). His laboratory aims to better understand the interplay between epidermal barrier function and inflammation, with particular emphasis on genetic diseases with impaired skin barrier function and novel therapeutic approaches. The laboratory has built a repository of skin samples harboring well characterized mutations. The team uses various skin models to study barrier dysfunction in skin disease.
